Prior to the 1990s, most investor-owned electric utilities were regulated and vertically Deregulated Markets. Beginning in the 1990s, many states in the US decided to deregulate–also known as restructure–their Variation Across Regions. An electricity market, also power exchange or PX, is a system enabling purchases, through bids to buy; sales, through offers to sell; and short-term trading, generally in the form of financial or obligation swaps. Bids and offers use supply and demand principles to set the price. This explainer discusses the different types of US electricity markets, how they are regulated, and implications for the future given ongoing changes in the electricity sector.
